Butcher Shop, Century-Old Home Destroyed By Two-Alarm Blaze: Maryland Fire Marshal

Nearly a million dollars in damage was caused when a butcher shop fire spread to a home of a vacant home that has stood for more than a century in Maryland, officials say.

First responders were called shortly before 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21, to the 5000 block of Stone Boundary Road in Cambridge, where the owner of a butcher shop reported a fire that rapidly spread to nearby structures.

According to the Office of the Maryland Fire Marshal, the fire originated inside the Dorchester County butcher shop while the owner was working inside, and embers landed on the cedar shingles of the vacant nearby home that had stood for more than 100 years.

The butcher shop, a storage building and the vacant two-story home were considered complete losses.

Investigators say that it took upwards of 75 members of the Rescue Fire Company an estimated three hours to get the flames under control with an assist from a "Tanker Task Force."

The fire caused an estimated $825,000 ($600,000 to the structures, $250,000 to their contents) in damages for the owner. The cause remains under investigation.
